When I look into your eyes
When I look into your eyes.
When I Look Into Your Eyes
When I look into your eyes,
the world stills.
Even the clocks hesitate,
as though nervous they might disrupt the silence
that stretches between us,
a silence, a moment of pause so thick with all I have yet to say.
When I look into your eyes,
I see a home I’ve never known.
Not brick upon mortar,
But a warmth—
a place, a ground where I can set down
the weight of the world
and simply be.
I see myself there, my form
standing in the doorway, the front door,
waiting for you to return
with the day’s light caught in your smile.
There’s a quiet in your gaze,
a calm, a peace that hushes
the restless voices inside me.
You don’t know this, not yet,
but your eyes are oceans, vast and deep
and I have been adrift for years.
Looking into your eyes,
I see a future, close, staring back
That I never dreamt as mine;
A wedding day bathed in laughter,
your hand trembling in mine,
not from fear,
but trembling from the overweight of a love
so vast it bends the air around us.
I see children—
I hear their laughter spilling through doorways,
their small hands reaching for mine;
I see myself carrying them to bed,
their dreams heavy on my shoulders,
their lives carved from the love
that began there, in your eyes.
I see us growing old together;
Your hair turning silver in the glow of twilight,
your voice softer,
but still the only music
I will ever dance to.
There are no words for what I see in you.
Every syllable, every word I try to summon, I try to form
falls short,
a poor offering for a vision
so sacred, so infinite.
But when I look into your eyes,
I feel it--
A pull, a gravity, a force
as though the universe has conspired
to place me here,
to let me find my reflection
in your gaze.
When I look into your eyes,
I see you,
and for the first time,
I see myself—
I see a man who could be more,
a man who could be worthy
of the life I see in your eyes.
