Unreturned

Unreturned.

Unreturned

In the quiet of your love’s clasp,

I stand, a shadow in the light,

Unable to give what you deserve,

Yet so burdened by the weight of your gaze.

Your eyes, they speak of dreams,

Of nights spent wishing on distant stars,

Of hearts entwined, yet here I am,

Silent and aching in the chasm of what could never be.

I see your heart, a tender bloom,

Reaching out for the warmth of mine,

Yet I pull away, not out of disdain,

But out of a fear of the sorrow I might bring.

For to love you back though a noble thought,

Would plant seeds of regret deep within,

Growing into thorns of unending pain,

A garden of grief we’d both reside in.

I wish I could be the one you need,

The one who lifts you high and complete

But love born of commiseration is a lie,

A burden too great for either to bear.

So here I stand, with your heart in my hand,

Watching the flame of your love burn bright,

Knowing my silence wounds you more

Than any false love could ever mend.

The ache of knowing you suffer for me,

It cuts deep, a relentless tide,

Yet to act, to pretend, to forge a bond,

Would shatter us both in time’s cruel dance.

I am the cause of your silent tears,

The reason for your sleepless nights,

And though I wish to ease your pain,

The truth binds me and keeps me from your light.

In this realm of unreturned love,

I dwell, a soul ensnared by fate,

Hoping you’ll find a heart so true,

That gives the love I could not create.

And as I watch your sorrow grow,

A silent plea echoes within,

Forgive this heart that couldn’t love,

For the pain it never wished to bring.
